Recently profiled in a New York Times Sunday Style cover story, the Dexter Lake Club Band is New York City’s premiere event band. Our sets are made up of the best classic rock, 80’s songs, and early soul/R&B, with special attention paid to playing songs other than just the usual wedding “staples.” We collaborate with our clients to create a unique set list that is reflective of their tastes, and which will serve as the perfect fit for their event. We will work with you to make the music at your event exactly as you've envisioned and we are always happy to accommodate special requests. We are a great choice for those that want a band that’s memorable and refreshingly different from the rest.
New York Magazine has named The Dexter Lake Club Band as one of their “Top Ten Reasons to Get Married in New York”, and the band has shared the stage with indie Rockers M. Ward, the Felice Brothers, members of the Walkmen, and Fugazi, as well as appeared on bills with artists such as Matt & Kim, Asher Roth, and Girl Talk. Comprised of some of New York City's most sought after young musicians, the members of the Dexter Lake Club Band have recorded, toured, and performed with the Cars, Todd Rundgren, the Walkmen, French Kicks, and Willie Nelson, and have also appeared on Late Show with David Letterman, Refused TV and Later with Craig Ferguson. The band and its members have appeared at the best known clubs in the NYC area, including the Bowery Ballroom, Irving Plaza, Webster Hall, The Knitting Factory, The Mercury Lounge, and CBGB’s, and have played at nearly every major venue in the area including the South St. Seaport, Madison Square Garden, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Jazz at Lincoln Center, MOMA, and the Chelsea Museum. The band has played private engagements at NYC’s top venues and spaces including the Metropolitan Club, Bowery Hotel, the Plaza Hotel, Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, Stage Six at Steiner Studios, Wave Hill, and the New York and Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. We work regularly with caterers and event planning companies throughout the country including: Breathe Events (Washington, D.C./Colorado), Susan Gage Caterers (DC), AE Events (San Francisco), Abigail Kirsch (NYC), Sidekick Events (NYC), Sofia Crokos (NYC), Lyndsey Hamilton Events (NYC), Mathew David Events, Naturally Delicious, and Machel Reeves Special Events (Toronto).
Why Choose the Dexter Lake Club Band?
“This wasn’t some band doing sterile imitations, this was a rock band.” – New York Times
“Because the music at your wedding does not have to be cheesy.” – New York Magazine
We promise not to play “Y.M.C.A.”, “Celebration”, “I Will Survive”, or the “Chicken Dance”. For those that want that same old night of music delivered by 50-year olds in ill-fitting tuxedos, there are literally hundreds of entertainment companies ready to furnish you with one of their many bands. But for those who want the music at their event to be memorable, exciting and unique, we’re a great option.
The Dexter Lake Club Band is an actual, real band. Most event bands are not true bands at all. They are part of a large entertainment company, often employing upward of fifteen or twenty bands made up of literally hundreds of rotating freelance musicians, who may or may not have even met each other before arriving at your event to play from a standard set list of songs. That is why they can be “customized” from 2-12 pieces. Often claiming to employ “set bands”, these companies often offer little to no information as to whom their band members are, or even the names of the band-leader or singers. As a boutique business we provide a personal touch that the large entertainment companies cannot. We enjoy working closely with our clients. You will not deal with a secretary or office person, but directly with us, the musicians who will be at your event.
The Dexter Lake Club Band is a group of old friends who formed the band at Oberlin College. We’ve been playing together for over a decade now and that is reflected in the breadth of our repertoire, and the chemistry, and experience that we bring to the stage. We deliver a high-energy set of songs that you and your guests will actually like. As our song list indicates, we’re a very versatile band, and we will make sure that guests of all ages enjoy and remember the music at your event. Please feel free to call or email to discuss your musical needs with us. We are happy to provide recent references, discuss special requirements/requests and, of course, to answer any questions you may have.
